Women’s bodies are constantly changing. From our first period through pregnancy, postpartum, perimenopause and menopause, our nutritional needs shift with us.
Midlife is no exception.
As we move through perimenopause and menopause, changes in hormones can affect everything from body composition and bone health to sleep, energy, mood and how we recover from exercise.
This isn’t a time to eat less and demand more from our bodies. It’s a time to become more intentional about how we nourish them.
Protein Becomes Even More Important in Midlife
One of the biggest nutritional priorities for women in midlife is protein.
Maintaining muscle is so important for our bodies as we age.
Retirement villages are filled with women who have lost their muscle density and bone strength. It's a tragedy to watch the decline and it's up to each of us to make a decision NOT to decline as we age. But to set a new standard of robust old age.
Well-sourced protein provides the amino acids that support and maintain muscle density throughout our lives.
Muscle supports strength, mobility, metabolic health and our ability to stay active and independent later in life.
A protein-rich meal built around foods such as beef, lamb, eggs, fish, chicken or quality dairy provides not only protein but a range of valuable micronutrients.
Protecting Bone Strength as We Age
Bone health deserves just as much attention.
Calcium matters, but so does protein, vitamin D, magnesium and other nutrients involved in maintaining strong bones. Resistance training and regular movement work alongside good nutrition here too.
Building and maintaining strong bones and muscles is one of the greatest investments we can make in our future independence.
Prioritising Nutrient-Dense Foods
Then there are the nutrients women can easily fall short on.
Iron, vitamin B12, zinc, iodine, selenium, omega-3 fatty acids and choline all have important roles in the body. Nutrient-dense animal foods, and organs are the perfect way to obtain many of these nutrients.
Ask yourself, how much nutrition am I getting from the food on my plate?
Don’t Be Afraid of Healthy Fats
Midlife also isn't the moment to become frightened of healthy dietary fat.
Foods like oily fish, eggs, full-fat dairy (if tolerated), avocado, coconut, tallow and butter, are all fabulous sources of essential fats.
Midlife Is a Time for Nourishment, Not Restriction
The bigger message is simple:
Your body isn't asking you to shrink. It's asking you to support it.
Eat enough. Prioritise protein. Lift something heavy. Get outside. Sleep. Manage stress where you can. Build your meals from real, nutrient-dense foods.
Menopause isn't the end of women's health.
It's another season of it, and one worth entering strong, well-fed and well-supported.
