How to stay nourished as a woman through every season of life

How to stay nourished as a woman through every season of life

If you're anything like me, you've probably asked yourself these questions at some point.

Should I be eating more carbohydrates during my cycle?

Do I need more protein as I get older?

What should I eat during menopause?

How do I support my hormones naturally?

Is fat good for me, or should I still be avoiding it?

What does a balanced diet actually look like for a woman in her 60s?

The questions seem endless.

Never before have we had so much nutritional information available to us, yet somehow we've never been more confused.

Every day we're presented with a new expert, a new study, another headline telling us what we should or shouldn't eat.

It's exhausting.

So, where do we begin?

Why women feel so confused about nutrition

Recently, I was sitting beside a lovely woman on a flight. She was in her seventies and shared with me that she'd been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

As we talked, she mentioned she was taking a statin and quietly added, "I know I'm a bit overweight."

Our conversation stayed with me long after we landed.

She reminded me of so many women I've met over the years.

Intelligent women.

Caring women.

Women who have spent their lives doing their best, following the advice they were given, trusting that it would keep them healthy.

It made me think about how many of us have simply accepted the nutrition messages we've heard for decades without ever stopping to question them.

Today, we have something previous generations didn't.

We have access to information, to research, to different perspectives and to people who are willing to challenge old ideas.

With that comes an opportunity, and perhaps a responsibility, to become active participants in our own health.

The link between metabolic health and brain health

One area that's receiving increasing attention for women is the relationship between metabolic health and brain health.

Some researchers even refer to Alzheimer's disease as "type 3 diabetes" because of the role insulin resistance may play in the brain.

While that term isn't an official diagnosis, it reflects a growing understanding that what we eat affects far more than our waistline.

It influences our energy, hormones, mood, muscles, bones and even our cognitive health as we age.

For decades, we were encouraged to fear saturated fat, choose low-fat products and base our diets on carbohydrates.

Those recommendations were largely influenced by ideas developed in the 1950s that have since been widely questioned as more evidence has emerged.

Nutrition science continues to evolve, and today we understand that the picture is far more complex than we once believed.

So, where does that leave us?

For me, it has actually made nutrition much simpler.

I've stopped chasing every new trend.

I've stopped worrying about counting calories or following complicated food rules.

Instead, I ask one simple question:

What foods are the most nourishing for the human body?

The answer keeps bringing me back to the same place.

Quality meat.

Eggs.

Natural dairy.

Organ meats.

Fermented foods.

Healthy animal fats.

Seasonal fruit when I want it.

As a woman in my sixties, I've found that building my meals around these nutrient-dense whole foods has transformed how I feel.

My energy is steady.

My blood work has improved.

I rarely feel hungry between meals, and I no longer spend my days thinking about food.

I also take our products. Mojo is my go-to every day, and I use 3-in-1 Collagen to support my skin and help keep my joints strong.

Women’s nutrition changes through life, but nourishment does not

Perhaps the most important lesson I've learned is this:

Although our hormones change through every decade of life, our need for nourishment never does.

Whether you're young or old, navigating your monthly cycle, training for an event, entering perimenopause, moving through menopause or embracing your seventies and beyond, your body is always asking for the same thing:

Enough protein.

Enough essential nutrients.

Real food that supports your biology.

Nutrition shouldn't leave us feeling confused.

It should leave us feeling confident.

Confident that the choices we're making are good for both our body and mind.

Real nutrition for every season of life

Nutrition isn't about chasing perfection or following the latest trend.

It's about returning to the foods that have nourished humans for generations and giving your body the building blocks it needs to thrive.

No matter your age, it's never too late to start.
