There are few times in a woman's life when nutrition feels more significant than pregnancy and postpartum.
Nourishing the Body During Pregnancy
During pregnancy, your body is doing something extraordinary: building another human while continuing to support you.
That requires nourishment.
Protein, iron, folate, iodine, choline, calcium, vitamin B12, omega-3 fatty acids and many other nutrients become incredibly important during this stage of life.
This is where nutrient-dense foods can really earn their place on the plate.
Eggs are a wonderful source of protein and choline. Red meat provides highly bioavailable iron, protein, zinc and vitamin B12. Oily fish can provide valuable omega-3 fatty acids, while quality dairy can contribute protein, calcium and iodine.
Pregnancy Nutrition Doesn't Have to Be Perfect
Pregnancy isn't about eating perfectly. Nausea, food aversions, exhaustion and changing appetites are very real. Sometimes eating what you can tolerate is the win.
Nourishment After Birth, Is Just As Important
And then comes postpartum.
We talk endlessly about preparing for birth, yet nowhere near enough about preparing to nourish the mother afterwards.
The postpartum body is recovering from pregnancy and birth while potentially producing breast milk, functioning on interrupted sleep and adjusting to an enormous physical and emotional change.
This is not the time for pressure to “bounce back”.
It's a time for rebuilding.
Foods to Support Postpartum Recovery
Think warm, substantial meals. Slow-cooked meat. Mince. Eggs. Broths and stews. Seafood. Dairy if tolerated. Fruit and vegetables. Plenty of fluids. Foods that are simple to prepare, satisfying and rich in nutrition.
Most importantly, feed the mother.
Bring her a meal. Fill her freezer. Make her breakfast. Put food beside her while she's feeding the baby.
Pregnancy grows a baby.
Postpartum rebuilds a woman.
Both deserve to be properly nourished.
