Learn moreAre Collagen Supplements Helpful for Arthritis?
Are Collagen Supplements Helpful for Arthritis? ( Article reproduced from arthritis.org) You’ve read the hype — gelatin, collagen supplements, even bone broth will ease your arthritis. But can collagen supplements or bone broth really help your arthritis? What is Collagen? Collagen is the most abundant protein in the animal kingdom. There are 16 types of collagen, but nearly all the collagen in your body is type I, II or III. Types I and III are found in your skin, tendons, organs and bone. Type II collagen is found in your cartilage – and hence, its link to arthritis. Collagen is made of amino acids (the building blocks of protein). The idea behind taking these supplements is that your body will use the amino acids to protect and rebuild your joint cartilage. Types of Collagen Supplements There are three types of collagen supplements: gelatin, hydrolyzed and undenatured. Gelatin and hydrolyzed collagen have been broken down from large proteins to smaller bits. When collagen is boiled for a long time (as in bone broth), it gets broken down into gelatin. Collagen can be further “predigested” into its basic amino acids and is called collagen hydrolysate, hydrolyzed gelatin, collagen peptides, or hydrolyzed collagen. Undenatured collagen is not broken into smaller proteins or amino acids. Undenatured type II collagen (UC-II) is not intended to be used by your body as a collagen re-builder. In a process called oral tolerance, very small doses of UC-II are taken to train your body’s immune system to stop attacking its own collagen, explains Kimberly Sanders, ND, Assistant Professor of Clinical Sciences at the University of Bridgeport College of Naturopathic Medicine. Do They Work? From a dietary perspective, your body can’t tell whether you ate a hydrolyzed collagen supplement, a piece of chicken, or some black beans. They’re all sources of protein, and once your digestive system has broken them down into amino acids, they are indistinguishable. So why bother with collagen supplements? Dr. Sanders says the “predigested” collagen supplements make the amino acids more easily available to your tissues. And, she explains, “When you take hydrolyzed collagen, you’re getting a boost of the specific amino acids that are rich in collagen.” But, she agrees, amino acids are amino acids and it doesn’t ultimately matter where they come from. The results of hydrolyzed collagen supplements research have been mixed. Some small studies, including a 2017 review article published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, have shown that people taking collagen supplements do experience pain relief. Other studies have found no benefit. No studies have found that collagen hydrosylates grow or repair cartilage. Studies for UC-II have not been conclusive. A 2016 study published in Nutrition Journal divided 191 people with osteoarthritis into three groups: one group received placebo; one group received UC-II and the third group received chondroitin sulfate supplements. After 180 days of treatment, the UC-II group had better pain, stiffness, and function than the placebo group (and a bit better than the chondroitin group). UC-II studies done on people with rheumatoid arthritis have had mixed results. A 2009 double-blind trial that included more than 500 people with RA found that undenatured collagen improved participants’ pain, morning stiffness, tender joint count and swollen joint count, but not as well as methotrexate. The study, published in Arthritis Research and Therapy, concluded that UC-II is safe and effective in the treatment of RA. “There’s not enough evidence to say that every patient with arthritis would benefit from any collagen supplement. But enough to say it’s promising, and studies should continue,” says Dr. Sanders. What to Look for Although evidence for the use of collagen supplements is unclear, you can be certain they’re not harmful if taken as directed. Some people do, however, complain of stomach upset or diarrhea. Dr. Sanders gives these recommendations for people wanting to give collagen supplements a try: UC-II should be taken in very small doses – usually 20–40 mg per day. Gelatin and hydrolyzed collagen should be taken in higher doses – 10 gm per day. It’s easiest to get this in powder form and blend it into a smoothie or other drink. Be aware that most collagen supplements are derived from animal tissues. If you are vegetarian or vegan, look for supplements labeled as “plant-based collagen builder.” These should have the same amino-acid balance as collagen, but not derived from animal sources. Unlike prescription and over-the-counter medications, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not “approve” dietary supplements like collagen or UC-II for safety and efficacy. Always tell your doctor what you’re taking and look for seals of approval from U.S. Pharmacopeia, ConsumerLab or NSF International to be more sure the products are manufactured properly. Learn moreHow many capsules should I take a day???
Ive had a few people asking this question. Our freeze dried organs are all meat! no added anything! these can be safely taken daily without the risk of overdoing it!! For most of human history we used animals for food and nutrition and instinctively used the organ meat for health and healing. Traditional peoples will use like for like, so for kidney health, kidneys were consumed, heart health, hearts were given. Liver is the ultimate super food, dense with our daily requirements of B12, choline, Vitamin A and C. These nutrients are essential for our health and detoxification. Enabling the body's processes to work optimally. Boost: We recommend that you consume around 100gm of raw liver a week, to support your health. 6 capsules a day will give you the equivalent of this a week. this is not a huge amount but cumulatively you will be providing your body with some awesome ongoing nutritional support. This also goes for our Thrive, organ mix. 6 capsules a day will give you great metabolic support. Ignition, our beef brain, has some nuance, organ meat is high in so many necessary vitamins, minerals and trace elements, but brain contains a higher fat content. Its high in cholesterol, which is great for brain function. But also new studies have shown that cholesterol is responsible for maintaining cell health in older adults. DHA, an omega 3 fatty acid, is high in brain tissue as well. We recommend you take 1500mg daily of Ignition. 3 capsules Restore: Type 2 collagen. I have always loved chewing on bones, beef, lamb and Pork. Being active, my body needs the restorative care I get from this type 2 collagen. It goes directly to my ligaments and joints. For me, adding more type 2 collagen into my diet has completely removed any joint pain I had simmering. We recommend that 1500mg of Restore daily will help your body maintain healthy tissue, from ligaments and joints to the fascia that gently supports inter-muscular tissue. (We are aware that not everyone wants to drop a lot of capsules a day so we are launching Boost Powder. This has a range of uses, you can add it to smoothies, stews, eggs your favourite way.)

Interestingly, Ive spent the last few hours searching google, for articles that the average person would want to read about health and diet. Im not surprised about my findings; so many articles about healthy food, fresh vegetables, grains, and not much about meat and its abilities to maintain a healthy immune system, and metabolic health. Thankfully I have podcasts loaded up on Spotify, for my daily run/walks to fill my mind with the latest research from the people I really rate in this field. Most are functional doctors, some are scientists and others athletes or biohackers who are wanting more from their nutrition, or are not convinced the the health guidelines that have been promoted by our 'institutions' for healthy living. Im not sure whether chaos is the right word for my title, Im feeling that Im now in the calm of the storm, while it rages around me, Im practicing down regulation of my nervous system with exercise, Yoga, new breath techniques and of course eating ancestral diet. I encourage all of you to take a look inside your selves and notice how busy, stressed or calm you are, and if calm is a state of mind/body how do you stay there?? and how can you share this with others. They also mention heat and cold cycling, how its important to expose the body to extremes of temperatures for health, think Wim Hoff. So cold plunges or cold showers actually help the mitochondria with their job of keeping the whole body system working optimally. Sleep is another really important aspect of good health. Getting as much as your body needs, is crucial to maintain a healthy immune system. This is regular, circadian activity. Learn moreStudy Shows Efficacy of Consuming Glandulars and Herbs
Study Published as Thiel, R. Efficacy of Glandulars and Herbs: The Result of 945 Cases. The Original Internist, Volume 19 (1), March 2012, 7-11 Abstract: Many people consume glandular-containing supplements to support or improve their health. Glandulars are normally dried glands of animals such as cows, sheep, and goats. Glands commonly used include parts of the brain, thyroid, thymus, kidney, heart, pancreas, adrenal, liver, etc. Some take them to assist with problems such as anxiety, panic attacks, fatigue, fibromyalgia, headaches, attention disorders, loss of memory, inability to focus, mood complaints, and a host of other ailments. The purpose of this paper was to evaluate the efficacy of individualized glandular and herbal-based interventions based upon reflex nutrition assessment. This paper contains a summary report of four pre-test, post-test trials, plus eight previously published trials. Of the 945 participants,928 (98.2%) reported improvement; p< 0.001. INTRODUCTION Glandular therapy has been used in countries such as the United States of America since at least the nineteenth century [1]. Since World War II, mainstream medical practitioners have been less inclined to recommend them, while holistic practitioners, such as chiropractors and naturopaths, have tended to be more inclined to use them. Several papers published in MEDline journals have indicated that glandular therapies are being looked at by practitioners with a variety of clinical backgrounds [2-6]. Although the use of glandulars has its critics [7-9], there has been no serious and credible study that shows that they are not effective. Furthermore, a study in the Journal of Surgery showed that oral pancreatic supplementation resulted in improved enzyme and growth levels for children who had a pancreaticoduodenectomy [2]. Oral consumption of a bovine thymus extract has been shown to reduce the frequency of recurrent respiratory infections and increase salivary IgA in children [3]. Other glandular substances are used regularly by the medical community. Additionally, reports have suggested that bovine glandulars may be helpful for myoclonic seizures [5], thyroid support [6], anti-inflammatory activities [7], Down syndrome [10], and immune response [5,7]. Evidence suggests that with oral consumption of glandular extracts, a small percentage (5-10%) of their peptides are not broken down into their constituent amino acids but are available for intact absorption in the small intestine [11-14]. A small amount of these absorbed peptides then circulate and some of them appear to assist the human body (especially for ill persons) in performing various anabolic and catabolic processes [11-15]. E. Howell and others have reported that the amount of enzymes that pass through the stomach is between 40-50% [16]. Glandulars are considered to be “cell food” (cytotrophic). It has been specifically claimed that glandulars may work by having a protective ability against autoimmune reactions against the related organs, “Glandulars, said Lee, neutralize such attacks” [17-18]. Autoimmune reactions are believed to be the major cause of primary hypothyroidism [19], as well certain other disorders. This report includes the results of clinical trials involving people taking one or more of four selected glandular formulas, as well as some earlier trials. The intention of these trials was to measure how often individualized recommendations using these glandular formulas could benefit people suffering with a variety of complaints within 90 days. SELECTION CRITERIA Subjects were eligible for inclusion in these trials if they agreed to follow the recommended intervention, agreed to provide (and did provide) feedback, signed a consent agreement, and indicated they suffered from problems monitored in this study, and took these selected glandulars for a period of up to 3 months. It does not include those who failed to provide feedback (which would be approximately 15% of those who could have participated). In the United States of America, naturopaths tend to see females more often than males, hence most of the statistics will be broken down by gender. METHOD AND MATERIALS After completing the selection documentation, all subjects were interviewed for approximately 45 minutes. All subjects were then assessed using Reflex Nutrition Assessment (RNA). RNA is a non-invasive technique used to assess nutrition status by observing the response of muscles under externally provided human-force (it is similar to other forms of muscle testing [15]). RNA was also used to determine quantities of supplements. Participants who appeared to have problems (through the interview process combined with reflex assessment) that could benefit from the herbal-glandular formulas were advised to take them. The herbal-glandular products were from Food Research International (note: because of FDA practices, no product names are listed in this paper). These products are in the “herbal-glandular” category in that they contain bovine glandular cytotrophin extracts as well as various plants and herbs. (While in traditional Chinese medicine, the term “herbs” can include any substance that might be used to promote better health, in the West, the term “herbs” is limited to substances that come from plants and does not include animal products.) Subjects were interviewed at approximately 30 day intervals to determine any change in their complaints. For all study Results including tables and Figures please refer to http://www.healthresearch.com/natural-health-practitioner.htm DISCUSSION This investigator has used glandular formulas clinically for decades and has advocated the proper use for them in medical and alternative journals [4,6, 21-29]. Properly advised glandular formulas clearly have been shown to be clinically effective. By combining the results of all twelve of the trials shown in this paper, they show that 98.2% of cases reported at least some improvement (though most reported major improvement) taking such formulas. These trials thus confirm that glandular products can help with a variety of human health complaints. They also confirm that individualized recommendations can be remarkably effective. Thus this researcher believes that these two “out-of-favor approaches” (glandulars and reflex nutrition assessment) should be considered by more practitioners. (Various holistic practitioners have supported muscle-testing, however [30-32]. This researcher does not believe that indiscriminately recommending the glandulars and herbs used in these studies (without proper training and without reflex nutrition assessment) will result in anywhere near the reported success rates this paper shows. Because the consumption of meat is discouraged in some circles and the fear of Bovine Spongiform Encephalophy (B.S.E., also known as “mad cow disease”) in many circles, some prefer not to consume glandular products. However, it should be noted no one so far has ever been proven to have contracted B.S.E. from glandulars. In addition, B.S.E. is not considered to be a threat in cattle/sheep that come from B.S.E./scrapie free countries such as Argentina and New Zealand (the glandulars in the four products mentioned all came from Argentina and/or New Zealand and/or wild fish) [33-35]. Thus, B.S.E. should not be a concern for those that consume glandulars from B.S.E.-free parts of the world. Properly prepared bovine, ovine, and goat glandulars from healthy animals are a generally safe way to feed human organs. They are not known to have any significant long-term negative side effects. Humans have been consuming them for thousands of years [36]. Glandulars became less utilized by mainstream medical doctors in the United States as the use of penicillin and pharmaceutical medicines increased. Because of this, many doctors are unaware of the potential benefits for their patients—benefits that are still available today. More studies researching the effectiveness and usefulness of glandulars should be encouraged. Learn moreThe Fat Burning Brain: What Are the Cognitive Effects of Ketosis?
Although mainstream sources still mistake “the brain needs glucose” for “the brain can only run on glucose,” regular MDA readers know the truth: given sufficient adaptation, the brain can derive up to 75% of its fuel from ketone bodies, which the liver constructs using fatty acids. If we could only use glucose, we wouldn’t make it longer than a few days without food. If our brains couldn’t utilize fat-derived ketones, we’d drop dead as soon as our liver had exhausted its capacity to churn out glucose.
